Longrifle Carving

Description

I'm still waiting to borrow a digital camera from a friend, to take some decent shots of the flintlock rifle, but here's one of the photos of the stock that actually turned out well. This was my first attempt ever at relief carving wood. The stock is curly maple, the carving is classified as "rococco", consisting of C and S scrolls. It's a carry over of the rennaissance and baroque periods, and was used on flintlock rifles as carving decorations, often resembling floral vines or ocean waves. I used three tools to do this: an exacto blade razor, a flat jewelers file (about 3 inches long) and a delta jewelers file, also three inches long. I spent roughly 10 hours, 2 designing, 1 tracing and perfecting the design onto the stock, and 7 carving and finishing. As bold as the carving looks, it's only 1/16" deep at it's deepest point.

You know i just redid my .50 cal. rifle and i was thinking about doing a design on the stock. Im kind of regretting not doing it. This looks really good. Nice job.
